How to wordsmith your way to success | Diary of an internal ...

Today I sat next to Brad Pitt on the bus and saw David Beckham at the library. Did that get your attention? Sorry to say nothing about that sentence is true, sigh. However, choosing the best part of your story as your introduction is the best way to hook readers in. This top tip is just one from a seasoned writer who has written a guest article for readers of Diary of an internal communicator.

We are just days away from National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which I?ll tell you all about tomorrow. So I?ve decided to focus this week?s articles on writing skills, as I think it?s a truth universally acknowledged that many comms pros are secret novellists or creative writers.

The ability to write well is often cited in interviews for internal comms positions, with the obligatory ?written test? increasingly becoming the norm. Many internal comms professionals, myself included, started their careers as journalists and learnt how to write to house style and had their work regularly critiqued by sub-editors.

Lots of paths lead to internal comms and not all of them include formal training on how to write, yet it is a skill that?s regularly required by employers. Step forward Jess Unwin. He??has 25 years experience in newspaper and business publishing, including working as a sub-editor on national Fleet Street titles in the UK. He is now a self-employed writer, sub-editor, proofreader, designer and blogger.

Here he shares some top tips in the first of his two-part series about writing skills for readers of Diary of an internal communicator.? Over to you Jess?

How to wordsmith your way to success
At the shiny, futuristic, beginning of the 21st century, when the possibilities for communication innovation seem limitless, it seems strange to be conjuring up images of the ancient Egyptians as inspiration for good writing skills.?Whatever communications platform we?re using, engaging your target audience is the goal ? and that can be best achieved by sticking to some of the old tried-and-trusted rules of writing, one the most famous of which is the ?pyramid?.

The pyramid is how get over your message quickly and effectively. Here are the first five of 10 helpful tips.

1. What?s the pyramid?
A term more familiar to ex-newspaper ?hacks? like me, it describes the right structure for writing and means starting your message with the most interesting stuff first (at the sharp, pointy top of the pyramid), and then spreading out and down through your story with the less important stuff

2. Intro
The first paragraph is the apex of your pyramid, containing the essence of your message. Its aim is to hook your reader. It?s an oft-used comparison, but it?s true to say that when thinking about an intro consider what you would say first to a friend in the pub if you had some juicy gossip.

You wouldn?t open by talking about the weather if you?d just been sitting next to Brad Pitt on the bus! An intro should so encapsulate your message it should be possible to cut off the rest of the story and find the first paragraph still makes sense on its own ? but obviously missing the detail. However, it must make the reader want to read more. Keep your intro short ? under 30 words ? and use just one sentence with as little punctuation as possible

3. Paragraphs
These are the building blocks of the rest of your pyramid. Create paragraphs that introduce new ideas and clarify distinct points, but they should also be like?links in a chain, with the end of one flowing into the next

4. Sentences
Keep them short ? one thought to one sentence whenever possible. This makes the bits of your message more digestible mentally. Get things the right way round in your sentences. For example, do use: David Beckham came in to borrow a children?s learn-to-read book when I was at the library yesterday. Don?t use: Yesterday, when I was at the?library, the man who came in to borrow a children?s learn-to-read book turned out to be?David Beckham (where is this library?! Rachel)

5. Quotes
Knowing who?s speaking is as important as what they?re saying. Unattributed quotes lack credibility because who?s to say the author isn?t making them up? (I know what some of you are thinking). It?s obvious, but early naming of the quoted source always adds to what?s being said. ?Maths is not my strong point? has a lot more impact if you explain?George Osborne said it. A great quote can sometimes sum up a story and so can be used in your intro but, generally, they are offered to add more detail later in your writing.

Thanks for your article Jess, I?m look forward to reading the next five tips, which I?ll be publishing very soon. Do you have any ways of making life easier for intenral comms pros? If so and you?d? like to write a guest article to share your knowledge, check out my guidelines and do get in touch, Rachel

Syria: Airstrikes mark the end of a supposed 'ceasefire' (+video)

State television said "terrorists" had assassinated an air force general,?Abdullah Mahmoud al-Khalidi, in a?Damascus?suburb, the latest of several rebel attacks on senior officials.

In July, a bomb killed four of Assad's aides, including his brother-in-law?Assef Shawkat?and the defence minister.

Air strikes hit eastern suburbs of?Damascus, outlying areas in the central city of?Homs, and the northern rebel-held town of Maarat al-Numan on the?Damascus-Aleppo highway, activists said.

Rebels have been attacking?army?bases in al-Hamdaniya and Wadi al-Deif, on the outskirts of Maarat al-Numan.

Some activists said 28 civilians had been killed in Maarat al-Numan and released video footage of men retrieving a toddler's body from a flattened building. The men cursed Assad as they dragged the dead girl, wearing a colourful overall, from the debris. The footage could not be independently verified.

The military has shelled and bombed Maarat al-Numan, 300 km (190 miles) north of?Damascus, since rebels took it last month.

"The rebels have evacuated their positions inside Maarat al-Numaan since the air raids began. They are mostly on the frontline south of the town," activist?Mohammed Kanaan?said.

Maarat al-Numan and other Sunni towns in northwestern?Idlib?province are mostly hostile to Assad's ruling system, dominated by his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Two rebels were killed and 10 wounded in an air strike on al-Mubarkiyeh, 6 km (4 miles) south of?Homs, where rebels have besieged a compound guarding a tank maintenance facility.

Opposition sources said the facility had been used to shell Sunni villages near the Lebanese border.

'We'll fix it'

The?army?also fired mortar bombs into the?Damascus?district of Hammouria, killing at least eight people, activists said.

One video showed a young girl in Hammouria with a large shrapnel wound in her forehead sitting dazed while a doctor said: "Don't worry dear, we'll fix it for you."

Syria's military, stretched thin by the struggle to keep control, has increasingly used air power against opposition areas, including those in the main cities of?Damascus?and?Aleppo. Insurgents lack effective anti-aircraft weapons.

Kim Jong Un's wife back in public after long silence

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is apparently a married man now that state media announced the leader toured an amusement park with his "wife, comrade Ri Sol Ju." NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By Reuters

Updated at 7:27 a.m. ET: SEOUL, South Korea ? Public appearances by Ri Sol Ju, the wife of leader Kim Jong Un, were reported by North Korean state media for the first time in two months on Tuesday amid mounting speculation that she had been chastised for inappropriate conduct or that she may be pregnant.

Her once-frequent appearances with her husband in public reported in state media had marked the starkest break by the North's leadership from the dour image of Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, who was rarely seen in public with any of his wives.?

Ri attended football match and a musical concert with Kim Jong Un on Monday. Their appearance at the concert "drew a thunderous cheer from the audience", the official KCNA news agency said on Tuesday.?

Kim Jong Un gets married, visits amusement park, state media reports

Activities and public appearances in choreographed media reports give rare indications of events inside the reclusive state, which is locked in a stand-off with its neighbors and the West over its nuclear weapons programme.

Kim Jong Il, who died in December, had suffered a stroke in 2008 which was followed by a sudden disappearance from media until re-emerging in early 2009 appearing gaunt and ill.

Monday's events in Pyongyang and his visit to a military college were also the first public appearance by the young new leader Kim Jong Un himself in about two weeks. He looked healthy and confident in photos accompanying reports over four pages in the Tuesday's edition of the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper.

North Korea claims US mainland within range of its missiles

South Korea's intelligence agency had joined the fray of speculation over the sudden disappearance of Ri from state media since early September saying state elders may have raised an issue over her casual and cheerful demeanour portrayed in media.

"The analysis has been that there was concern over breach of discipline [by Ri] among North Korean elders, plus the speculation of pregnancy," South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoted the National Intelligence Service as reporting in a closed-door briefing to parliament.

Kim Jong Un still a mystery, Leon Panetta says

North Korea broke the mystery surrounding a young woman who had been seen with Kim in July by saying she was the leader's wife. The announcement itself was part of a trend that Kim has followed to break out of the secretive management style of his father.

North Korea's state media have not disclosed when the two got married or whether they had any children.?

(AP) ? One week before a close election, superstorm Sandy has confounded the presidential race, halted early voting in many areas and led some to ponder whether the election might even be postponed.

It could take days to restore electricity to more than 8 million homes and businesses that lost power when the storm pummeled the East Coast. That means it's possible power could still be out in parts of some states on Election Day next Tuesday ? a major problem for precincts that rely on electronic voting machines.

But as the storm breached the coast, even some of those intimately involved in the election seemed in the dark about what options are available to cope with the storm. Asked Monday whether President Barack Obama had the power to reschedule the election, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he wasn't sure.

Some questions and answers about what's possible and not when it comes to reworking Election Day.

Q. Could the Nov. 6 election be changed?

A. Yes, but it's highly unlikely, and it's not up to the president. Congress sets the date for the presidential election ? the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, every fourth year. Congress could act within the next week to change the date, but that would be tough because lawmakers are on recess and back home in their districts campaigning for re-election. Plus, it's likely that would mean changing the date for the entire country, not just those affected by the storm. What's more, Congress only selects the date for federal races, so changing the date would wreak havoc for state and local elections also scheduled for Nov. 6. States might have to hold two separate days of voting, which could bust state budgets.

Q. What about pushing back the election just in some states?

A. It's possible, but the legal issues get tricky. States, by and large, are in charge of their own elections. Each state has its own laws dealing with what to do if an emergency jeopardizes voting and who can make the call. Federal law says that if a state fails to conduct an election for federal races on the day Congress chooses, the state legislature can pick a later date. But state and federal laws don't always jive perfectly. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has said his state's laws don't grant him authority to reschedule the presidential election.

Q. Have elections ever been postponed before?

A. Yes, but not on the presidential level. New York City was holding its mayoral primary when terrorists struck on Sept. 11, 2001, and the city rescheduled the election. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Louisiana's governor postponed municipal elections in New Orleans after elections officials said polling places wouldn't be ready.

Q. Other than rescheduling the election, can anything else be done?

A. Voting hours could be extended at various locations. In places where electronic voting machines are in use, paper ballots could be used instead. Some areas also might choose to move polling locations if existing ones are damaged, inaccessible or won't have power on Election Day.

Q. Would those options create any other problems?

A. Lots. If poll hours are extended, under a 2002 law passed by Congress in response to the disputed 2000 presidential election, any voters who show up outside of regular hours must use provisional ballots, which are counted later and could be challenged. Sandy's impact was felt in some of the most competitive states in the presidential race, including Virginia and Ohio. The more provisional ballots that are cast, the greater the chances are that the winner won't be known until days or even weeks after the election.

There's another issue if poll hours are extended in some areas ? such as counties with the worst storm damage ? and not in others. That could prompt lawsuits under the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause, said Edward Foley, an election law expert at The Ohio State University.

Relocating polling places is also risky because it could drive down turnout, said Neil Malhotra, a political economist at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. "If you disrupt their routine and the polling place they've always been going to, even if you don't move it very far, they vote less," he said.

Q. What is the federal government doing to help?

A. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's administrator, Craig Fugate, said Monday he anticipated the storm's impact could linger into next week and affect the election. He said FEMA would look at what support it could provide to states before the election. "This will be led by the states," he said.

Kanex Sydnee

For many, the $149 (direct) Kanex Sydnee will seem like a superfluous item?who needs to be able to charge three iPads or other tablets simultaneously? Well, as Apple made clear in its latest iPad event, tablets are finding their way into more and more classrooms and businesses. That means multiple iPads in a single location, all of which will need regular juicing.?For those applications, the Sydnee makes sense, with a clean design that makes it easy to cradle and charge up to four devices, eliminating the mess of cables and lack of available power outlets. And though it's designed with iDevices in mind, the bring-your-own-cable design means it'll work with just about any USB powered device.?It's a little pricey, but if organization is a key concern, the Sydnee is a good solution.

Like many Apple-centric accessories, the Sydnee, available in black or white, adheres to a clean and modern design aesthetic. The smooth lines and glossy finish are attractive, but the stand is constructed from all plastic, so there's a little flex and rattle when you're swapping tablets in and out, but overall, it feels sturdy. There's a small lip on the front of the stand and an interior space that's separated into two compartments by a clear plastic divider. The stand can easily cradle three iPads, even in moderately bulky cases, and there's some rubber padding in the cradle spots, but not enough to fully protect your iPad if the stand gets jostled.

Inline

Around back are four USB ports, each delivering 2.1 amps of power, which is sufficient for all iPads, iPhones, and pretty much any USB-powered tablet or smartphone. Kanex includes three 16-inch 30-pin Apple cables, which, of course, won't be compatible with the 4th-generation iPad or the iPad mini without adapters. Fortunately, since the cables aren't built in, you can bring your own cable or add an adapter as necessary. There's a plastic arm on the back of the stand to wrap lengthy cords around, while a slotted rubber piece up top lets you thread and organize all the cables. A power cord extends from the back of the stand, which occupy a single power outlet.

In my tests, the Sydnee was able to charge three iPads simultaneously, with the fourth USB port open for, say, an iPhone or another USB-powered device. It also worked with various Android powered tablets. You'll only be able to use the outermost tablet while docked, and only in landscape orientation, since there is no cutout for the power adapter on the front lip.

At $150, the Kanex Sydnee does seem somewhat overpriced since it's essentially a 4-port USB hub (which you can get for about $20 online), married to a simple plastic tablet cradle. Still, you get three 30-pin cables in the box, and if you have multiple iPads or other tablets in a single location, the Sydnee will make storing and charging them an easy and organized affair. Otherwise, the appeal is, admittedly, a bit limited.?

Get Fit Now To Stay Healthy As You Get Older | Healthy Answers ...

Baby boomers stay fit 300x203 Get Fit Now To Stay Healthy As You Get OlderI?ve always recommended that patients can change their fitness levels at any age by exercising more and eating nutritionally optimal diets. And now, recent research shows that there?s an even greater benefit of becoming physically fit by middle-age (45-65) and I?d like to tell you more about it.

Midlife Fitness Can Ward Off Diseases of Aging

Although there can be some disagreement about what is ?midlife? and ?old age?,? in our modern times of longer survival rates and better healthcare, I?d classify midlife as the years from 45-65.? It is this midlife time that researchers out of the UT Southwestern University and Cooper Institute have found to be key in determining whether you will stay healthy into your post midlife years.

In their study [Midlife Fitness and the Development of Chronic Conditions in Later Life, Archives of Internal Medicine, 2012], they found that people who had increased their fitness levels by 20% by the time they reached midlife also decreased their risk of developing the chronic, degenerative diseases of old age.? These conditions include Alzheimer disease, congestive heart failure, respiratory conditions, and certain cancers.

The researchers concluded that spending adequate time per week doing aerobic activities like walking, jogging, bicycling, running, etc, translated not only into more years of life, but higher quality, active years.? Expanding your range of higher quality life years means that debilitating illnesses may be completely prevented or compressed to a very short period of life far into old age.? This means that you can extend an active, healthy lifestyle well into your golden years if you increase your physical fitness levels by even 20% by the time you hit midlife.? That?s quite a benefit!

How Can You Increase Your Midlife Physical Fitness?

As I said earlier, increases in physical fitness can be achieved at any age.? The National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute (NHLBI) recommends that adults get at least 2.5 hours of moderate to intense aerobic activity per week.? The first thing I tell my patients is that their exercise routines should meet these important criteria:

  • They provide necessary resistance for bone and muscle strengthening
  • They provide necessary strengthening for lung and heart capacity
  • They burn sufficient calories to help lose, or keep weight, stable
  • They?re FUN! If you dread doing exercise, the likelihood of you doing it on a continual basis is low.

Fun Ways to Get/Stay Physically Fit in Midlife

There are a lot of different ways to increase midlife? physical fitness in your life that don?t necessitate spending hours in an indoor gym. In fact, there are many options for getting good, fitness building exercise into your life that is both healthy and increases your social activity.? Here are a few good ones I like:

  • Lively dance-type group exercise like Zumba, Hip-Hop, and Latin dance classes are offered all over the United States. They provide exhilarating, fat-burning exercise.
  • Group basketball, racquetball, tennis ? many community recreational centers offer opportunities to join ongoing teams. Skill levels range from beginner to experienced.
  • Walking/jogging/bicycling clubs ? social meeting places like Meetup.com offer physical activity groups to join.? You can participate a few days a week or even just 1.
  • Kettlebells ? 20 minutes of kettlebell workouts increase strength and tone in every muscle of your body much faster than resistance machines at the gym. And, they really are fun to do.? Get a friend, or your spouse, to join you 3 times a week.

Prevent Diseases of Aging with Optimal Nutrition

In addition to regular exercise, it?s also critically important that you include certain nutrients in your diet to ensure that you stay healthy.? These include:

  • Vitamins:? A, B complex and extra B12, C, E, alpha-lipoic acid, resveratrol, Co-Q10.? Free radical scavenging antioxidants that damage DNA and hasten aging.
  • Hormones:? Melatonin, Vitamin D3.? Boosts immune system and scavenge free radicals.
  • Minerals zinc and calcium:? Research out of Oregon State shows 40% of older Americans are deficient in zinc. 11 mg a day for men, 8 mg for women.? Keep bones healthy by eating calcium-rich foods like dairy, kale, and broccoli several times a day.
  • Protein:? Preserves muscle strength and helps keep blood sugar stable.? At least 0.5 grams/per lb of body weight.? 160 lbs = 80 grams protein.

Increasing fitness at any age is easier than you think. Adding certain foods, vitamins, minerals, etc, to your diet can wipe out deficiencies, boost your mood and decrease fatigue.? As well, just doing exercise activities you enjoy can help ensure that you stay active, healthy, happy and socially engaged well into your golden years. So, turn off the TV or computer, get up and go do some fun exercise, feel better and live longer!

Stay Well,

Early autism intervention improves brain responses to social cues

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? An autism intervention program that emphasizes social interactions and is designed for children as young as 12 months has been found to improve cognitive skills and brain responses to faces, considered a building block for social skills. The researchers say that the study, which was completed at the University of Washington, is the first to demonstrate that an intensive behavioral intervention can change brain function in toddlers with autism spectrum disorders.

"So much of a toddler's learning involves social interaction, and early intervention that promotes attention to people and social cues may pay dividends in promoting the normal development of the brain and behavior," said Geraldine Dawson, lead author and chief science officer for the advocacy group Autism Speaks.

"For the first time, parents and practitioners have evidence that early intervention can result in an improved course of both brain and behavioral development in young children," she said.

Dawson began the study while she was the director of the UW Autism Center. The study was published online Oct. 26 in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Forty-eight children, aged 18 to 30 months and diagnosed with autism, either participated in routine community-based interventions or the Early Start Denver Model, which emphasizes interpersonal exchanges and shared participation in activities. The model was developed by Dawson and co-author Sally Rogers, a professor at the UC Davis MIND Institute.

Participants received one of the interventions for about 20 hours each week over a period of two years. For the children randomly assigned to the ESDM group, treatment took place two hours, twice a day, five days a week, by trained interventionists who came to the child's home. The children got an extra boost from their parents, who were trained to use ESDM strategies during routine exchanges with their child.

A previous study found that the ESDM intervention improved IQ, language, and adaptive skills and the researchers wanted to know if the approach also led to brain changes.

After two years of treatment, the brain function of the participants -- now about four to five years old -- was measured with electroencephalography while the youngsters viewed social stimuli, such as faces, and nonsocial stimuli, such as toys.

"Humans are experts at processing faces, but the brains of children with autism have delays in the ability respond to faces," said co-author Sara Webb, a UW research associate professor. If the brain can quickly identify a face, she said, then it can build on this to also quickly decide whether the face is of a man or a woman, happy or sad, and familiar or not.

Children in both intervention groups showed similar brain responses to faces as did children in a control group who did not have autism, suggesting that "the high level of intervention in both groups allowed the children with autism to catch up to the children in the control group," Webb said. "That's fantastic news."

Looking at a higher level of brain processing, the researchers studied whether the treatments changed brain measures of attention and cognitive engagement when seeing faces compared with a nonsocial stimulus. Eleven of 15 -- or 73 percent -- of children in the ESDM group showed greater attention to faces than to toys. In contrast, the EEGs of only five of the 14 recipients of the community intervention, or 36 percent, showed similar activation.

"The ESDM intervention resulted in greater attention and cognition brain activity to social stimuli, and these brain function patterns are more similar to the typical developing group of children," Webb said.

She stressed not only the importance of receiving intensive early intervention for autism, but that the intervention should focus on enhancing social attention, reciprocal interactions and engagement with a social partner.

Samsung ATIV S Handson with Samsung's first Windows Phone 8 device

It's taken its sweet time showing itself but we've finally got to handle Samsung's first Windows Phone 8 device, the ATIV S (not to be confused with the similarly-named Windows RT tablet). At Microsoft's launch event for its new mobile OS, the phone's 4.8-inch AMOLED display certainly helps to make the most of those colorful tiles -- this time around a higher resolution (1,280 x 720) screen kept everything looking sharp. Aside from the screen, the hardware doesn't pack a unibody build, but it does offer the power user both a 2,3000mAh battery and the microSD slot -- a combination that's looking pretty rare among debut Windows Phone 8 devices. On the other hand, Samsung's brought its (admittedly divisive) glossy plastic shell of its Android Galaxy phones, although there is some cosmetic differences. We take a tour of the hardware -- and that freshly minted OS -- after the break.

Hurricane Sandy: Could it change the outcome of the presidential race?

Hurricane Sandy has scrambled the last week of the presidential race, upsetting campaign schedules, putting both President Obama and Mitt Romney off-message, and raising doubts about Election Day. In a race this close, Sandy?could change or at least postponing the results.

Hurricane Sandy has scrambled the last week of the presidential race, upsetting campaign schedules, putting both President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney off-message, and raising doubts about Election Day and how early voting is going.

It?s not out of the question that the hurricane ? a massive and unusual storm event forecast to rip into the Atlantic coast from the Del-Mar-Va peninsula to New England before barreling west across New York State and Pennsylvania en route to the all-important swing state of Ohio ? could directly affect the outcome, changing or at least postponing the results.

Maryland already has canceled early voting Monday, per Gov. Martin O?Malley?s order Sunday. Faced with power outages that could last several days, the Virginia state elections board is planning for extended early voting hours.

RECOMMENDED:?Are you more (or less) conservative than Mitt Romney? Take our quiz.

Both candidates have had to adjust their last-minute campaign travel plans.

Obama?canceled campaign stops Monday in Virginia and Tuesday in Colorado to monitor the storm but planned to go forward with other events Monday in Florida and Ohio, with former president Bill Clinton at his side, AP reports. Romney cut three stops in Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to campaign with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio before heading Monday to Wisconsin, where the former Massachusetts governor has chipped away at Obama?s?lead.

TV ads can have more impact than cheerleading events with the faithful; they?ll continue as long as there?s electrical power. Both sides are flush with cash in this billion-dollar campaign.

But an ?October surprise? like this ? particularly in a very close race where the challenger has been gaining on the incumbent ? has the potential to do more damage to Obama then to Romney.

All the GOP candidate has to do is avoid the appearance that he?s taking political advantage of a potential tragedy ? something he failed to do during the early hours of the terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

But if things go wrong with the federal response to Sandy, Obama will be blamed. And the Obama camp in particular is counting on early voters and get-out-the-vote efforts come Election Day.

The latest European hurricane forecasting model (ECMWF) shows the predicted track of hurricane Sandy coming into closer agreement with the US Global Forecast System (GFS).

The ECMWF model was showing a more southern track for Sandy, with landfall occurring on Monday afternoon. Now, the European model shows Sandy on a more northward track with the center of the storm coming ashore at New Jersey early Tuesday morning.

If you look at the 2 p.m. EDT Friday National Hurricane Center's forecast track for Sandy, the European supercomputers predict Sandy will land at the northern part of the cone (see below).

Bear in mind that meteorologists stress that, beyond 24 hours, the accuracy of these models becomes less certain. And this is one of the more complex storm systems, with many moving parts, which could alter Sandy's track. For example, if the blocking high pressure area in the northern Atlantic moves off sooner than predicted, Sandy wouldn't hang a left toward the East Coast. But most forecasts predict the high to force Sandy to turn toward the coast.

Hurricane Sandy, which according to the AP has so far left 39 people dead in the Caribbean, is shaping up to be a big deal. The Monitor's Ron Scherer quotes forecasters warning of widespread flooding, storm surges, snow in the Appalachians, and heavy wind damage from the slow-moving storm.

Weather Underground's Jeff Masters says that the storm is "likely to be a billion-dollar disaster." At AccuWeather, meteorologist Joe Lundberg writes that if Sandy makes landfall near Long Island or northern New Jersey, which he says is the most likely scenario, it would be "an economic and human disaster on multiple levels."

Another meteorologist described Sandy in even more colorful terms: A blog post by AccuWeather's?Senior Vice President Mike Smith quotes a Facebook post from a "very prominent and respected National Weather Service meteorologist," which reads:?"I've never seen anything like this and I'm at a loss for expletives to describe what this storm could do."

Both Virginia and Maryland? have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm, and voluntary evacuation orders have been issued for New Jersey's Cape May County, the Garden State's southernmost county. ?

There are a lot of moving parts to this weather system, meaning that the computer models could be inaccurate and Sandy could fizzle. But if you live on the East Coast between Virginia and Maine, it's worth it to stock up on batteries and water, and to make a straightforward evacuation plan. Check the Monitor's?list of hurricane preparedness tips for specifics.

Sandy is just a Category 1 hurricane (74-95 mph winds). What's all the fuss?

The short answer: Storm surge over a wide area, over a sustained period.

Aside from the hybrid mega-storm aka Frankenstorm stuff that we've cited below, there's the sheer size of Sandy. She's big. Sandy's got some girth, and she's expected to get bigger.

Sandy has grown in size every day, with tropical storm force winds now extending 275 miles? from the center. But Monday or Tuesday, there are forecasts that indicate Sandy could have strong winds 400 miles from her center.

The 11 a.m. EDT National Hurricane Center report showed some slowing of her speed, and her winds aren't getting stronger. And Sandy's a little less "organized." But her reach is growing. Rather than high winds in tight, her 80 mph winds are reaching out further. That's part of the concern among meteorologists.

High winds will keep the storm surge threat high. "This large wind field will likely drive a storm surge of 3 - 6 feet on Monday and Tuesday to the right of where the center makes landfall, on the mid-Atlantic or New York coasts. These storm surge heights will be among the highest ever recorded along the affected coasts, and will have the potential to cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage," writes? Dr. Jeff Masters at Weather Underground.com

Dr. Masters goes on to write:

"The latest H*Wind analysis from NOAA's Hurricane Research Division put the destructive potential of Sandy's winds at 2.1 on a scale of 0 to 6, and the destructive potential of the storm surge much higher, at 4.2 on a scale of 0 to 6. The full moon is on Monday, which means astronomical tides will be at their peak for the month, increasing potential storm surge flooding. With Sandy's strongest winds expected to last at least 12 hours near the time of landfall, the peak storm surge will affect the coast for at least one high tide cycle, and possibly two. This will greatly increase the potential for storm surge damage and coastal erosion. If Sandy hits Long Island, as the GFS (Global Forcast System) model predicts, the storm surge will be capable of over-topping the flood walls in Manhattan and flooding portions of the New York City subway system."

Friday Oct. 26 12:55 p.m.

Gov. Martin O'Malley is declaring a state of emergency across Maryland as Hurricane Sandy approaches, the Associated Press reports.

O'Malley said Friday the declaration gives the state flexibility to activate the Maryland National Guard and provide assistance to local emergency managers. He says everyone should prepare for extreme weather by reviewing their family emergency plans, checking their emergency supplies staying informed.

Heavy rain and high winds are expected to reach the Maryland coast Saturday night. Forecasters predict several days of foul weather including the possibility of snow in the western Maryland mountains.

Friday Oct. 26 12:40 p.m.

Why is Sandy a 'Frankenstorm'? There's more to the moniker than a hurricane arriving just ahead of Halloween.

Hurricane Sandy is a tropical cyclone. But computer models say it's on a collision course with a "extratropical trough" - a low-pressure storm system associated with the jet stream.

A tropical cyclone gets its energy from warm water. So, under normal circumstances, Hurricane Sandy would lose energy as it moved north and came ashore on the East Coast.

But the computer models say that won't happen this time. In this rare case, Sandy will meet up with an "extratropical trough" which draws energy not from the surface temperatures but from the temperature differential between the cold polar air and warm tropical air. The jet stream itself "is tightly coupled to that temperature contrast. The contrast in temperatures between air masses is ultimately what drives the jet stream, and the stronger the temperature contrast, the stronger the jet stream will be," explains Adam Sobel an atmospheric scientist and a professor at Columbia University.

The jet stream, which this extratropical trough is associated with, is unusually far south right now.

When Sandy moves ashore it will likely form a hybrid storm with properties of both types of storms - thus the 'Frankenstom' label. This type of storm is rare and the computer models are struggling to figure out exactly what will happen. But as Sobel notes in a thorough explanation of this on Climatecentral.org, "this new energy source will enable Sandy to maintain its intensity, or maybe even increase it."

Friday Oct. 26 11 a.m.

Meteorologists are looking at the computer models and are freaking out. They've not seen predictions of barometric pressures dropping this low in these parts of the US in their lifetimes. The NOAA Hydrometeorological Prediction Center Extended Forecast discussion notes that computer models "SHOW PRESSURE SOLUTIONS WELL BEYOND WHAT HAS EVER BEEN OBSERVED NEAR THE NEW JERSEY/NEW YORK COAST (EVEN EXCEEDING THE 1938 LONG ISLAND EXPRESS HURRICANE)."

As the?Capital Weather Gang blog observes:

"The clash of the cold blast from the continental U.S. and the massive surge of warm, moist air from Hurricane Sandy will cause the storm to explode and the pressure to crash.

These historic low pressure levels simulated by the model are equivalent to a category 3 or 4 hurricane, which have peak winds over 115 mph. But Sandy?s winds will not be that high, because as it transitions into this hybrid hurricane-nor?easter monster, its core will unwind. So its peak winds will diminish, but strong winds will be felt over a vast area."

Friday Oct. 26 10:10 am

Remember Snoctober? Last October, just before Halloween, an early snowstorm hit the East Coast and knocked out power to more than 2 million residents from Pennsylvania to New England. Many homes were without power for days and some folks didn't get their electricity back for weeks.?

Well, state governments and private utility companies don't want a repeat of the Snomaggedon of last fall. Utility companies from North Carolina to Vermont are canceling vacations and arranging for power repair crews to come from the Midwest to help out.

AP reports: "A spokesman for Unitil in New Hampshire says the utility is talking to crews as far away as Tennessee and Michigan to make sure they will be available. Alec O' Meara said typically, Unitil talks about reaching to contractors as far as three days in advance of a storm, but the calls are being made sooner than that this time."

The Associated Press reports that Vermont is also warning farmers to prep for Sandy.

"The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is advising farmers to harvest crops still in the fields. For those who need power for milking cows or cooling milk tanks, the agency warns to prepare for power outages by making sure generators are working."

Friday Oct. 26 9 a.m.

Check out Miami-based CBS TV weather forecaster David Bernard's forecast for Sandy on video. He offers a good explanation of why Sandy's northward track will be blocked by a large high pressure area in the Atlantic, pushing it westward toward Delaware. Then, Sandy is likely to encounter a cold front, as the jet stream dips deep into the US South. That collision will could produce 1 to 2 feet of snow in the higher elevations of West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Friday Oct. 26 8:45 a.m.

Where is Sandy headed? It's still too early to say definitively. Here's what the computer model shows which was issued by the National Hurricane Center at 8 a.m. Friday. This track shows Sandy taking a hard left turn toward the East Coast on Monday. It has the eye of the storm hitting Delaware Tuesday at 2 a.m. and heading inland toward Pennsylvania and the Ohio valley.

Hurricane Sandy tears through Bahamas, weakens to Cat. 1

Friday Oct. 26 8 a.m.

Hurricane Sandy passed through the Bahamas early Friday knocking out power but there were no reported deaths. The Associated Press reports a total of 22 fatalities across the Caribbean in Sandy's wake.

"Generally people are realizing it is serious," said Caroline Turnquest, head of the Red Cross in the Bahamas, who said 20 shelters were opened on the main island of New Providence.

Sandy hit the Bahamas as a Category 2 Hurricane, with winds above 105 m.p.h. but weakened to a Category 1 hurricane Thursday night, with sustained winds of 80 m.p.h. Currently forecasters expect Sandy to remain a Cat. 1 hurricane or weaken to a tropical storm as it moves northward.

But meteorologists are warning that it's not just the strength of Sandy that's the issue. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco has warned that? a confluence of weather systems could produce what he has dubbed a "Frankenstorm," arriving along the East Coast of the US with tropical storm-force winds Tuesday. Cisco said that there was a 90 percent chance that most of the U.S. East Coast would get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday.

?This storm is dangerous,? says Bryan Norcross, a hurricane specialist at the Weather Channel told The Christian Science Monitor. ?If it comes to pass like the consensus forecast, it will be unprecedented, we have never seen anything that looks like this.?

Thursday, Oct. 25 5 p.m. EDT

After battering eastern Cuba, Hurricane Sandy intensify as it crosses the Bahamas today, with its western edge grazing Florida's coast. ?The US National Weather Service warns that Sandy might "help spawn a sprawling storm that could bring significant rain, wind and waves to the Northeast."?

Sandy's exact track is hard to pin down, but meteorologists warn that that it is unlikely to head out to sea, thanks to a storm to its east and an area of high pressure west of Greenland, which together are helping to confine Sandy to the East Coast.

What's more, as Weather Underground notes, Sandy is expected to collide with an eastward-moving dip in the jet stream, creating the potential for a "hybrid" storm with high winds spread over a large area.

At this point, Sandy is expected to make landfall on Monday, somewhere between Virginia and Maine.

To make matters even worse for East Coasters, the storm's land Monday is a full moon, meaning a high tide, which increases the chances of significant coastal flooding. ?

Snowfall is also a concern particularly in the Appalachians. As New Englanders learned last?Halloween, heavy snowfall combined with leafy trees has a tendency to knock down power lines.

It utilized to be that when a particular person was to create a weblog, they might achieve this
only in text and picture format. And this format grew to become incredibly well-known, as well
as an obsession for many men and women. However, given that the introduction of high-
speed World-wide-web, along with the broad availability of those broadband connections,
millions of men and women have moved off in their keyboards and on to their electronic
camcorders.
Video blogging is promptly getting to be probably the most well known strategies to connect
and speak with all the planet about you. Essentially, due to the fact video blogging has grow
to be so popular, there is even a new phrase for it, it really is referred to as vlog. But how are
you able to access these vlogs and also, why are they becoming so well known?

To response the very first query, it is possible to uncover video clip weblogs just about
anyplace you look. Nevertheless, just about the most well known places to discover video
weblogs is through YouTube, it truly is here that a huge number of men and women update
their video clip weblogs daily, allowing you the possibility to basically hear them talk about
what's happening within their planet, instead of just listening to it. But, why are video weblogs
so common?

One would think that quite a few persons wouldn't need to publish their faces across the
online world for everyone to watch, on the other hand, this presumed paranoia is nothing at
all over that, presumed. A lot of people today find that expressing their emotions about a
particular predicament, or conveying a resolution to an issue, is much less complicated and
quicker than merely typing it out. With video clip weblogs, you are capable to attach along
with your audience in an particularly personal way.

As an alternative to studying cold words on a highly embellished background, you might be
capable to actually sit and observe a different individual discuss a thing which is very
important to them. Did you know that 85% of what we discover and absorb is completed by
only two senses of our physique? These two senses are our sight and audio. Therefore, after
you are viewing, or making, a video blog you're in a position to know and soak up more
information than simply reading text alone.

It really is due to the energy of video that lots of entrepreneurs and advertisers have started
to use video as a substitute for texts and seems. This may be correct by visiting MySpace or
any other well known site, simply because after you go to them you are going to most likely
see an advertisement that is not made from solely text, but having a video clip included.
Mainly because you are viewing a video clip, there's a longer lasting impact from the product
within your mind.

Even so, irrespective of why you choose to observe or create a video weblog, there's one
particular thing that absolutely everyone has in prevalent. We reside in a culture that may be

predominately standoffish and distant, on the other hand, with all the power of web video,
and video blogging, individuals are able to connect with their fellow guy, devoid of basically
seeing them.

Ford to sell last business in auto parts unit

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co , the No. 2 U.S. automaker, said on Monday that it would sell its last remaining auto parts company to a joint venture between French supplier Valeo SA and a former Detroit Pistons basketball player.

The sale of Ford's Plymouth Township, Michigan-based climate control business fulfills the goal of its Automotive Components Holdings, a unit created in 2005 to manage plants that Ford acquired from its largest parts supplier, Visteon Corp .

Ford created ACH in October 2005 with 17 plants to prevent parts disruptions while Visteon downsized its operations. Ford intended to sell, close or merge those operations over time.

"Few companies take the longer-term comprehensive approach we took with the restructuring of ACH," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of Americas. The company did not disclose the sale price.

Earlier this year, Ford sold an interiors parts business to French supplier Faurecia and a lighting business to an affiliate of auto parts maker Flex-N-Gate.

The climate control business will be sold to Detroit Thermal Systems LLC, a joint venture between Valeo and V. Johnson Enterprises, a company owned by Vinnie Johnson, who earned the nickname "The Microwave" when he played for the Pistons in the 1980s.

The deal will give Valeo, a global player in thermal systems, a firm foothold in the North American market. V. Johnson Enterprises holds 51 percent of Detroit Thermal Systems, while Valeo holds the remaining 49 percent.

The sale is contingent on state and local incentives, Ford said. In mid-2013, Detroit Thermal Systems will begin to transfer assets and operations from the Plymouth Township factory to a new plant in Romulus, Michigan.

The parties expect to complete the process by the end of 2014. Until then, ACH will continue to operate the plant. After that, ACH will close down, spokeswoman Della DiPietro said. Ford will still own the Plymouth Township factory.

The news comes the day before Ford announces third-quarter results. The automaker is expecting to lose $1.5 billion in its European operations, which have been hit hard by an economic downturn that has curtailed vehicle sales.

So far this year, Ford shares have fallen 3.7 percent, while those of larger rival General Motors Co have risen nearly 15 percent and the broad Standard & Poor's 500 stock index <.spx> has jumped 12.3 percent.

PPC Ads too Expensive for Your Ecommerce Business? | Fortune3 ...

Posted October 29th, 2012 by Pablo

Depending on how long you?ve had an internet based business, or not, you?d know and understand the increasing cost in Pay-Per-Click ads. A few years back, any business starting up can get in the game by creating a website and throwing up ads, within a few hours you were live and had access to the world via search. Are those days over? Many believe so ? In terms of actually scaling and competing against the big boys.

CAN YOU STILL COMPETE IN PAID SEARCH?

The simple answer is yes. Although paid search has become way more competitive in the past 2-3 years due to the nature of the ever-expanding web and competitors, paid search (PPC,) has become more expensive making it harder for new players to compete.

ARE ALL COST-PER-CLICK UP?

The simple answer to this is NO. Not every single advertiser has seen rates go up. For the most part, yes, but in certain niches, CPC prices are still very affordable allowing new players to compete well in the market and start a business just from driving traffic from paid search.

WHAT ARE THE AVERAGE PAY-PER-CLICK COST?\

average pay per click google cost

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO PAY-PER-CLICK?

If PPC is too costly for you, it?s time to put social media and SEO into high gear. First, it?s very important to understand these online marketing strategies take time to really start taking effect and working for you. You need just that, a REAL STRATEGY to succeed in social media and search engine optimization.
The reality is that with SEO, it?s almost more competitive than PPC because most businesses while not advertising through PPC programs, do have a website and organically and naturally, are your competitors within organic search.

IN CONCLUSION?

It?s very important that you understand how the competitive nature of paid search is changing. Don?t throw in the towel because of high prices only. There are plenty of ways to optimize paid search to lower your conversion rates which we will talk about in future blog post!

Obama's iPod a bit like his electorate _ varied

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's iPod could pass for a voter outreach tool.

Interviewed Monday on Cincinnati radio station WIZF, Obama ran through his musical tastes, an eclectic and all-encompassing list of artists and tracks that reflect the varied coalition of voters he is seeking to attract.

Asked what was on the "presidential iPod," Obama replied that he had "a pretty good mix."

"I've got old school ? Stevie Wonder, James Brown. I've got Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan," he said.

There are also plenty of tracks that young voters might have downloaded to their own collections.

"And then I've got everything from Jay-Z, to Eminem, to the Fugees, to you name it. There's probably not a group that you play that I don't have on my iPod," Obama told the station's E.J. Greig.

For the voters whose tastes are more esoteric, "I've got some jazz ? John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Gil Scott-Heron," the president said, adding, "You've got to mix it up. It just depends on what mood I'm in."

No mention of The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, who has been campaigning for Obama.

Or country music. That vote tends to tilt to the other guy.

RE and Construction Contract Disputes - The Ohio Real Estate Blog

It used to be the AIA and other form contracts contained a mandatory arbitration clause. A few years ago, the AIA removed its arbitration clause and the default is now litigation unless the parties specifically select arbitration. However, when negotiating a contract, whether for construction or other real estate matters, the question arises, how to handle disputes.

There are pros and cons to both.? It depends on what's important to the parties.? Here are some factors to consider--

  • Privacy - If privacy is important to you, arbitration is the better option. Litigation in court is very public. However, if privacy matters more to one party than the other, then being able to threaten a public court battle can be strategically useful to the other party.
  • Costs - Arbitration requires higher filing fees and the parties pay for the arbitrator(s) time.??If the dispute is small, arbitration is less desirable.?
  • Speed? - Some say arbitration is faster. Other litigators have told me that arbitration is no longer quicker and cheaper than litigation. Know how quickly arbitration can proceed versus your local court system before agreeing to one approach over the other. One advantage to arbitration in a large, complex case is the ability of an arbitrator to structure the procedures to the specific needs of a case and otherwise move the case efficiently. That may help contain costs in the long run; 'may'--no guarantee.
  • Expertise - In arbitration, you can select arbitrator(s) that have some expertise in the subject matter of your contract. Having an arbitrator with the appropriate expertise can help in obtaining a well-informed decision.?In litigation, you are randomly assigned a judge whose biggest skill may be in winning elections. Some jurisdictions are moving to create?specialized business/commercial courts to help improve the court system on handling these cases.
  • Procedural - In litigation, there are rules of?civil procedure that address the process and rules of discovery that address how you obtain discover information to be used in trial.? Depending on how you set the parameters for arbitration, you don't automatically have a right to use discovery rules to obtain information. If you have access to all the information and evidence that you need for the hearing, then it may not matters. However, if in order to prove your side you need information that is in the possession of the other side, then you may not have a way to discover that information in the arbitration process unless your agreement provides for it.
  • Inclusion of necessary parties - Arbitration is by agreement only. If there is some likelihood that dispute resolution would require the involvement of several parties subject to different contracts, then the dispute resolution provision in each agreement would need to be essentially the same or you would need their agreement to participate.?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on what makes sense in a given situation. As a transactional lawyer (i.e., I 'do deals' and never set foot in a court room,) I often find that the best solution is frequently to just work out a reasonable business solution and avoid both.
