Rome bus crash kills at least 37

ROME (AP) ? A tour bus filled with Italians returning home after an excursion plunged off a highway into a ravine in southern Italy on Sunday night after it had smashed into several cars that were slowed by heavy traffic, killing at least 37 people, said police and rescuers.

Flashing signs near Avellino, outside Naples, had warned of slowed traffic ahead along a stretch of the A116 autostrada, a major highway crossing southern Italy, before the crash occurred, said highway police and officials, speaking on state radio early Monday. They said the bus driver, for reasons not yet determined, appeared to have lost control of his vehicle.

Hours after the crash, firefighters said that they had extracted 37 bodies ? most of the dead were found inside the mangled bus, which lay on its side , while a few of the victims were pulled out from underneath the wreckage, state radio and the Italian news agency ANSA reported..

The radio report said 11 people were hospitalized with injuries, two of them in very critical condition. It was not immediately known if there were other survivors or any missing.

Rescuers wielding electric saws cut through the twisted metal to better probe the interior of the bus, stopping occasionally in silence to listen for any cries for help, even as the bodies were put into coffins to be taken to a morgue.

Reports said as many as 49 people had been aboard the bus when it ripped through a guardrail after slamming into several cars, then plunged some 30 meters (100 feet) off the highway and into a ravine near a wooded area. In its plunge, the bus tore away whole sections of concrete barriers as well as guardrail. The concrete lay in large chunks in a clearing in a wooded area where the bus landed.

State radio quoted Avellino police as saying the bus driver was among the dead.

Occupants of cars which were hit by the bus stood on the highway near their vehicles. One car's rear was completely crumpled, while another was smashed on its side. It was not immediately known if anyone in those cars had been injured.

The highway links western and eastern Italy across the south.

Early reports said the passengers had spent the day in Puglia, an area near the Adriatic on the east coast famed for religious shrines. But on Monday, a state radio reporter at the scene said authorities told him that the bus had been bringing the passengers home after an outing to a thermal spa area near Benevento, a town not far from Avellino. Others at the scene said the passengers might have visited a town near Benevento that was the early home of Padre Pio, a late mystic monk highly popular among Catholics in Italy.

Passengers came from small towns near Naples, and relatives streamed to the crash site.

The bus dove off the highway near the town of Monteforte Irpino in Irpinia, a largely agricultural area about 40 miles (60 kilometers) inland from Naples and about 250 kilometers (160 miles) south of Rome.

A reporter for Naples daily Il Mattino, Giuseppe Crimaldi, told Sky TG24 TV from the scene that some witnesses told him the bus had been going at a "normal" speed on the downhill stretch of the highway when it suddenly veered and started hitting cars. He said some witnesses thought they heard a noise as if the bus had blown a tire.

A local prosecutor arrived at the crash scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Aurora's Ethiopian community celebrates "culture of sharing"

A woman serves food at the Aurora Taste of Ethiopia on Sunday, July 28, 2013. (Joey Bunch, The Denver Post)

AURORA ? A thousand pancakes weren't nearly enough, not for the hundreds of people who waited in a long, winding line during the opening two hours of the first Taste of Ethiopia Grand Festival Sunday in Aurora.

"We're going to have to order more," said an ebullient chief cook Sophia Belew of the whole wheat flatbread Ethiopians call injera, which is both bread and utensil to gobble gastric delights such as gomenand wot.

Belew

oversaw 14 people from the festival's native land who cooked up a pile of food Saturday and served it Sunday to thousands of people of several races and cultural backgrounds.

The Denver metro area is home to at least 17 Ethiopian restaurants, according to Ethiopian community organizers, but Sunday's event had an edge on the competition, in Belew's opinion.

"You go can go to the restaurants and get all the food, but you have to come here for the music, the communal coffee, the wonderful jewelry and clothes that are for sale, but especially the hospitality," she said, as the tumult of pounding bass drums and festival chatter filled the background.

Seated in a circle beneath a tree nearby, Jeff Pfeifer, his wife, Erin, and their three children, all younger than 6, sat in a circle with the food in the center. They sampled from the four Styrofoam plates as their mother, a former Peace Corps worker in Ethiopia, explained each dish.

"We want them to know a world bigger than Colorado," Jeff Pfeifer said.

The Pfeifers also demonstrated what it meant to be an Ethiopian for a day, according to festival organizer Nebiyu Asfaw's explanation of the culture before a dance exhibit that filled the Laredo Elementary

gymnasium to standing-room only.

"We are a people with a culture of sharing," he said.

Teenagers, most first-generation Americans, performed ancient dances from across Ethiopia, stirring the audience to applause and whoops to match the energy of the history in motion.

"That's my granddaughter," said Esbeluw Andachew who immigrated to the United States in 1985, pointing to one of the dancers twirling in the center of the gym floor. "She started learning these dances, and it's made her very, very interested in where we, her family, came from. I'm so proud of her."

A number of elected officials and candidates were in attendance on Sunday. Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said the students in the city's public school system represent almost 100 countries of origin, including Ethiopia.

"This is the type of diversity and the type of community we ought to encourage, respect and enjoy in the city of Aurora," he told the packed gymnasium.

Apple Probes New Violations at Troubled China Plants

(Newser) ? Apple is again feeling the heat for the conditions at its Chinese factories, but this time it's Pegatron that may be to blame. A US-based advocacy group claims the supplier's plants, which are taking on more and more Apple production, have "benefited from and relied upon labor violations to increase their competitive edge," CNN reports. China Labor Watch lays out the violations, ranging from pollution to unpaid overtime, in a new report compiled after undercover investigators spoke with almost 200 workers from three factories between March and July.

Workers also complained of tight living quarters, packed cafeterias, workweeks over 60 hours, and recruitment firms illegally taking portions of their wages, the group said, per Reuters and the Wall Street Journal. Though Apple has looked into the plants?even made surprise audits within the last 18 months?a rep says the claims "are new to us and we will investigate them immediately." If the audits find any wrongdoing, "we will require that Pegatron reimburse (workers) in full," says the rep.

Judiciary has failed to attract the best talent in India, says Arun Jaitley

Bhubaneswar:?Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley has called for urgent reforms in the judiciary, saying the institution has failed in attracting the best talents.

Speaking at the BK Ray Memorial lecture in Bhubaneswar yesterday, Mr Jaitley said fewer people in judiciary are inclined to work as judges because of the increase in the income of lawyers who find commercial litigation in a post-liberalisation India more lucrative.

Mr Jaitley himself is a senior lawyer based in Delhi.

Though the BJP leader called the system of collegium effective, he felt the time to review the system has come since it is prone to favouritism when it comes to appointment of judges.

The collegium is a system under which appointments and transfers of judges are decided by a forum of the Chief Justice of India and the four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court.

In his address, the Rajya Sabha Opposition leader also favoured the creation of a National Judicial Commission to handle issues of accountability of the judiciary.

Hudson wedding party boat crash: Driver had 'signs of intoxication'

A boat carrying members of a wedding party struck a barge in the Hudson River Friday night. The boat's operator was charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter Saturday. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Tracy Jarrett and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

The pilot of a speedboat that crashed into a barge on the Hudson River while carrying six members of a wedding party, including the bride-to-be, was charged on Saturday with vehicular manslaughter.

Jojo John, 35, was also charged with three counts of vehicular assault over Friday night?s crash, said Rockland County Sheriff William Barbera, according to Reuters.

Read more at NBC New York

"There were signs of intoxication," Barbera added, although lab test results were still pending.

John was in custody at Nyack Hospital Saturday night where his condition was ?critical,? according to hospital spokesperson Lauren Malone.

The best man, identified as Mark Lennon, was still missing after the accident. The search was suspended at 5 pm local time on Saturday and was set to continue on Sunday morning.

One female body was found discovered adrift and without a life jacket not far south of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Rockland County Undersheriff Robert Van Cura told NBCNewYork.com.

Four others remained in the hospital Saturday while investigators continued their search, it reported.

The Coast Guard said six people were on a 21-foot Stingray near Piermont, N.Y., when it hit the barge at around 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday near the bridge.

The accident happened shortly after the boat left Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, Rockland County Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera said at a news conference on Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press.

"While the Rockland County Sheriff, N.Y. State Police and U.S. Coast Guard continue to investigate this tragic incident, the New York State Thruway Authority is conducting its own review of safety procedures on the Hudson River as part of the New NY Bridge Project,? said Brian Conybeare, special advisor to the governor, in a statement.

The bride-to-be, identified by family members as Lindsey Stewart, 30, was to get married on Aug. 10, relatives told NBC New York.

?Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," Conybeare added.

Groom-to-be Brian Bond, 36, is among the four injured passengers, who were described as suffering severe injuries, including head trauma and broken bones. Bond is in ?fair? condition at Westchester Medical Center, according to spokesman David Billing.

Some of those injured are awake and providing information to investigators. Bond, however, is currently unable to speak due to his injuries, Walter Kosik, the bride?s stepfather told NBC New York.

Police said that while it would have been dark in the area at the time of the crash, the barge was lit up.

"At this point, Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC, has reported to the Thruway Authority that all Coast Guard lighting requirements were met and that the barges were properly lit Friday night. All lighting was checked Saturday morning and is fully operational at all barge locations associated with the project,? Conybeare said in the statement.

Samsung Galaxy Note III may come in three screen sizes: 5.5, 5.7 and 6 inches

Samsung Galaxy Note III could come in three screen sizes 55, 57 or 6 inches

It's no secret that Samsung's working on a next-gen Galaxy Note, but little did we know that it might come in three screen sizes. We've previously seen the model number SM-N900 pop up in a number of places, and this time, our friend @techkiddy spotted the screen sizes alongside some new names on Zauba, a database that somehow tracks India's import and export shipments.

Unlike the rumors out there that only mention a single screen size, Zauba lists all 5.5-, 5.7- and 6-inch versions of this supposed Note III, and that these are all shipped to India "for R&D purpose." If true, this would match the multi-size strategy of the Galaxy Mega. Additionally, there are a handful of variant names here: SM-N900A, SM-N900AI, SM-N900P, SM-N900R4, SM-N900S, SM-N900T and SM-N900V. We're not quite sure what the differences are, but some of these are tagged with multiple screen sizes, so they're probably just packaged with different radios. Regardless, we have a feeling that JK Shin will tell us everything at IFA in September.

Update: Adam from Samsung Updates has explained what these model numbers mean. Go take a look.

Storms Chances Today

Storm Risk Today

A summer cold front arrives from the northwest this afternoon. It?ll bring us some decent storm chances later today, even a slight risk of severe weather. By tomorrow we?ll enjoy cooler weather (and even slightly lower humidity).

This morning the southern edge of a complex of storms over Oklahoma is producing storms and rain. These storms threaten Montague and Cooke Counties; rain will be just to the south of there and reach into Decatur and Denton. This precipitaiton will move to east as the morning goes on. Mostly cloudy skies will be over all of the north Texas.

NTX Rain Chances1111

A cold front moves into our northwest corner by late morning. This front will start to fire up thunderstorms as it moves over the DFW by early afternoon.

NTX FutureCast 12kmA

Strong storms will form along the line; the risk will be damaging winds and large hail. The severe threat is from the metroplex to the east. The highest risk will be from Greenville down to Palestine.

NTX Rain Chances11111

We?ll have some clouds and passing showers on the other side of the front. By mid-evening the skies should start to clear some. A northwest wind will start to finally drop the humidity. This sets up some great weather for the Saturday.

NTX Tomorrows Highs

We are in the last days of July heading toward August. This is traditional the heart of the summer heat for north Texas. A high pressure ridge builds in by Tuesday. By Thursday we?ll start another run of 100? weather that will start the new month.

Florida Hospital Fish Memorial's Wound Care Center Adds ...

ORANGE CITY ? Florida Hospital Fish Memorial has recently installed new flat-screen televisions in the exam rooms of the Wound Care Center. The Orange City hospital?s Foundation paid the $1,300 for four new televisions to enhance patients? care.

?

?For most of us, when we cut our finger or stub our toe, it?s a minor annoyance that causes us to simply wrap an adhesive bandage around it and complain about it for a day or two until it starts healing,? said Pam Harkrider, Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Program Director at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial. ?But for those with slow-healing wounds, these wounds can be more than an annoyance; they can be limb- or life-threatening.?

?

For those patients with slow-healing wounds, perhaps due to a weakened immune system or poor circulation, the services at the Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Wound Care Center can be necessary. Thomas Tero of Deltona was one such patient.

?

?My leg was rotting away,? Tero said. ?I was afraid I was going to lose it.?

?

Godson Oguchi, MD, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Wound Care Center Medical Director, told Tero that years of ulcers on his calf had compromised the integrity of his skin and muscle tissue and that he had almost no blood flow in his damaged leg; an amputation of the leg seemed highly likely.

?

But thanks to a regimen of debridement ? a surgical procedure where dead tissue is removed ? as well as antibiotics and 60 treatments in the Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Wound Care Center?s hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment chamber, Tero is still standing on two good legs. He credits not only Dr. Oguchi, but the rest of the Wound Care staff for their skilled, compassionate care.

?

While Tero is very appreciative of his care, the procedures to treat slow-healing wounds like his can be both time-consuming and painful. During debridement, specially-trained wound care nurses painstakingly clean and dress wounds, taking care to be as gentle as possible. It is a delicate process and can be time-consuming process, which in turn, can cause anxiety for patients.

?

?We wanted to help ease their fear or anxiety about their treatment,? said Debi McNabb, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Foundation and Marketing Director. ?We hope the flat-screen televisions in our examination and treatment rooms help enhance our patients? experiences.?

?

?The patients are so happy to have something to view during procedures without having to look at their wound,? said Pam Harkrider, Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Program Director at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial. ?The new TVs help provide a diversion for patients? comfort.?

?

The installation of these televisions comes on the heels of Florida Hospital Fish Memorial?s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center receipt of the 2012 Center of Distinction award from Healogics, Inc., one of the nation?s leading wound care management companies. This award recognizes Florida Hospital Fish Memorial?s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center for achieving outstanding clinical outcomes for the past 12 months.

Foul-smelling plant blooms near US Capitol

A titan arum, a huge plant native to Indonesia, went into full malodorous bloom on Sunday evening at the US Botanic Garden conservatory, drawing thousands of visitors seeking to inhale its putrid stench.

An enormous plant on Capitol Hill is in bloom, after vigorously emitting a putrid smell that many likened to that of a rotting corpse.

Kept at the United States Botanic Garden Conservatory, the titan arum is famous among botanists for having the largest unbranched inflorescense of any plant in the world, which one way of saying that it is the world's biggest flower (though technically it's made of several hundred flowers, like a daisy). In the wild, it can grow up to 12 feet tall.

But the plant, which is native to the steamy rain forests of Sumatra, Indonesia, is probably best known for the malodorous M.O. that it has evolved to attract pollinators.

"It was a little like when a trash truck passes you on a hot day," says?Laura Condeluci, the Botanic Garden's public programs coordinator, in a phone interview.?"It's definitely that rotting smell."

When titan arum blooms ? and it does so unpredictably, sometime waiting years or even decades to share its revolting stench with the world ? it uses the noxious fragrance to attract dung beetles and carrion-eating insects, which can then serve to spread the plant's pollen.?

The fetid odor is only one of titan arum's methods to draw bugs. The plant also generates heat; when blooming, parts of the plant warm to roughly human body temperature. The warmth not only helps the mephitic scent carry over larger distances, but it also helps fool any visitors into further believing that it is composed of recently deceased flesh.

"You look around and you think, where's the dead animal?" said?Bill McLaughlin, the Botanic Garden's plant curator.

'It comes to find you.'

This particular titan arum had never bloomed before. It had been living at a facility near the Botanic Gardens, when horticulturalists noticed that the plant was starting to flower. The putrescent plant was transported to a display area at the Botanic Garden Conservatory, where it grew from four to eight feet in just ten days.

Then, on Sunday evening, Mr.?McLaughlin saw that the plant's collar was loosening a bit. He climbed up a ladder and peered inside.

"I got the first little waft of odor and a little pulse of heat," he said. "It was quite a queasy odor."

Predicting Final Landing Spots for Best Remaining 2013 NBA Free Agents

Age:?29

Years Experience:?8

Last Team:?Chicago Bulls

Free-Agency Status:?Unrestricted

2012-13 Per-Game Stats:?13.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.1 blocks on 43.3 percent shooting

UPDATE: Monday, July 22, at 3:47 p.m. ET by Dan Favale

According to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports, the Nuggets will sign Robinson using their bi-annual exception, which is worth a shade over $2 million.

Robinson's deal with Denver will span two years and is worth approximately $4.03 million, per Sam Amick of?USA Today. The second year of the deal is a player option.

---End of update---

?

Entering the dog days of free agency, Nate Robinson still hasn't officially found a home, which is beyond perplexing.?

Exhibit A:?

Player PTS ASTS REBS STLS FG% 3P% PER
Player X 18.2 1.8 3.0 1.2 45.0 42.6 16.0
Player Y 18.5 6.2 3.2 1.5 43.3 40.5 17.4

Player X represents the per-36 minute stats for Kevin Martin, who will receive close to $30 million from the Timberwolves over the next four years. Player Y is of course Robinson, who will likely be forced to sign a deal worth at or around the veteran's minimum.

Height plays an issue obviously, but Robinson is being continuously undervalued.

Aggrey Sam of CSN Chicago says that there have been nibbles of interest from the Nuggets, Bucks, Wizards and Lakers, in addition to the Bulls. The Knicks also had interest, though they can only offer the veteran's minimum.

Nothing substantial (i.e. beyond the veteran's minimum) has presented itself, leaving Robinson to wallow in unemployment well into free agency.

This is becoming a regrettable reoccurring theme for the veteran, albeit undersized, combo guard, and it's hardly a reflection of how valuable he was to the Bulls come playoff time.

I remain of the mind that Robinson might get a raise, and perhaps even a multi-year deal this time around, though neither of those are guarantees.?

No matter the terms, Robinson will realistically be signing for far less than he's actually worth, most likely with a contender.?

Things could always change, but don't expect them to.

Prediction:?Robinson ends up with the Nuggets

Dunham?s Sports coming to Randolph Mall in Asheboro

Dunham's Sports plans to open a store at the Randolph Mall in Asheboro.

Sporting goods retailer Dunham?s Sports is coming to the former Dillard?s location at Randolph Mall in Asheboro, according to an announcement from mall operator CBL & Associates Properties Inc.

Dunham?s is expected to open sometime before the 2013 holiday season. The retailer operates more than 170 stores offering traditional sporting goods and athletic equipment and a variety of active and casual sports apparel and footwear, including one in Burlington.

The Dillard?s store closed this month, and renovations on the 60,200-square-foot anchor space are expected to begin soon. The announcement did not name a general contractor for the project, and CBL (NYSE: CBL) representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Dillard?s Inc. (NYSE: DDS) confirmed in April that the Randolph Mall store would close. Store closures are determined by a store?s performance, a Dillard?s spokeswoman said at the time.

Geochemical 'fingerprints' leave evidence that megafloods eroded steep gorge

[unable to retrieve full-text content]For the first time, scientists have direct geochemical evidence that the 150-mile long Tsangpo Gorge, possibly the world's deepest, was the conduit by which megafloods from glacial lakes, perhaps half the volume of Lake Erie, drained catastrophically through the Himalayas when their ice dams failed during the last 2 million years.

iOS 7 beta 3 vast issues on iPhone 5, 4S, 4

iOS-7-beta-3-vast-issues-

We have been looking at iOS 7 beta 3 with our in-house developer on the iPhone 5, 4S and iPhone 4. This has been the case since the first beta launched and we clearly noted problems being reported in previous articles, and also the issues being fixed in the latest iOS 7 beta 3 update. Today, we wanted to highlight the feedback Phones Review has received in regard to the latest update thanks to it being pretty vast in complaints.

The chance of iOS 7 beta 4 releasing this Monday is high, so it is good to look at the current problems with all iOS devices and specifically iPhone 5 and 4S. We have been running the iOS 7 beta 3 on these two phones and have a lot of insight.

iOS 7 beta 3 issues expected but reports are vast ? we mentioned previously that developers would find problems with the software thanks to it being a beta with still up to another 2 months before public release. With this being said, we also know that it is good to highlight any problems found to aid them being fixed and for bug reports to be submitted to allow for fixes in future betas like iOS 7 beta 4 or 5.

Our iPhone 5 is testing iOS 7 beta 3 for our in-house developer and has been running pretty solid with some minor lock-ups and crashing. The developer has an iPhone 4S with major crashing problems on iOS 7 beta 3, and this has led to a black screen at least once a day with a soft reset being needed every time. This doesn?t mean that every iPhone 4S user with iOS 7 beta 3 has the same issues, in fact it is very different but issues are being reported to Phones Review.

In our earlier article that touched on iOS 7 beta 3 being needed to fix crashing on the iPhone 5 and 4S, this was published before beta 3 launched, it has over 200 comments reporting numerous issues with the current beta.

Here are some of the reported issues we have received from our readers: ?Siri is not working on my iPhone 4s and Siri?s wavy speech line appears and then disappears quickly. Attempts to bring it up leads to failure?.

Another reader states their ?iPhone 4 runs iOS 7 beta 3 and it crashes A LOT?. This is one of many reports about crashes from phone calls, in FaceTime video calls, while in apps and sometimes on the home screen. Again this is not the same for every use, but there are certainly a lot of people experiencing crashing that want it fixed in iOS 7 beta 4.

Another popular issue is with answering calls on the iPhone 5 with iOS 7 beta 3. This is what one of our readers stated, ?I cannot answer calls in beta 3. The phone does not ring when I see an incoming call, and when I answer the call it shows 2 calls from the person with both on hold?. We received an email from one user claiming resetting their ringtone helped fix this issue for a few calls, but it would revert back to the same problem after a while. It is worth noting our review of the iPhone 5 with iOS 7 beta 3 doesn?t include this issue.

There?s plenty of other issues being reported with iOS 7 beta 3 on the iPhone 5, 4S and 4 but again certain problems are expected and will be fixed in future betas. Other problems include the loss of contacts, Notes written in letters and not words, cameras crashing on lock screen, multitasking on iPad mini just revealing a blank screen and a lot more.

What problems do you have with iOS 7 beta 3 and what device are you running?

Denton police looking for man who attempted to sexually assault a woman leaving Texas Woman?s University library

Denton police are looking for a man they say attempted to sexually assault a woman as she was leaving the Texas Women?s University library Thursday night.

Police say at around 8:30 p.m. the victim was walking to her car parked on North Locust Street when she decided to take a shortcut on Third Street. She told police she began walking down the driveway of a house, and when she was near the house a man grabbed her.

Police say the man put his hand over her mouth and shoved her into the house, where she hit her head. The man told her not to say anything and began to tear off her shirt. The victim told police she tried to scream, but the suspect had covered her mouth with his hand. He then began trying to unbuckle her belt.

She said she tried to bite the suspect?s hand, and may have bitten one of his fingers. The victim said that when the man tried to kiss her, he loosened his grip over her mouth, which allowed her to scream.

The man then fled on foot, and police say he was last seen running south on North Locust Street.

Police say the suspect is a black male in his late 20s to early 30s with a scruffy beard. He is six feet tall and was wearing a red T-shirt and baggy black jeans. The suspect also had tattoos on both of his arms, possibly on his forearm.

The case is still under investigation.

The by-product resulting from organic waste management is effective as a fertilizer

The by-product resulting from the management of organic waste could offer optimum uses in fertilizing land intended for maize feed and soft winter wheat, according to a study carried out by the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, Neiker-Tecnalia. As far as mineral fertilizers are concerned, this fact could mean considerable savings for farmers. The research has been carried out in collaboration with ONITEK, a company devoted to technological management and development in energy and environment matters for the agri-food industry, and has had the support of the Department for Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Country.

Neiker-Tecnalia specialists have analysed the upgrading as fertilizer of the by-products resulting from the anaerobic digestion process a process in which biodegradable material decomposes in the absence of oxygen of the organic waste management plants being promoted by ONITEK. The tests, carried out over the last three years in Arkaute and Larduia (Alava-Spain), indicate that the application of the digestate achieves the same results as conventional mineral fertilizers for maize feed and soft winter wheat.

The tests have highlighted that the same yield and grain quality is obtained, so the digestate is emerging as a good alternative for the phosphorus and potassium and to a considerable extent for the nitrogen provided by mineral fertilizers. The Neiker-Tecnalia researchers estimate that the use of the digested matter could lead to potential savings of about 200 euros per hectare compared with the purchase of mineral fertilizers, besides being of considerable benefit to the environment.

The digestate comes from the plants that manage organic waste and looks very much like cattle slurry. Its content in terms of nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium make it suitable for use on crops.

Between 20 and 39 tonnes per hectare

The first of these tests was carried out in 2011 with the application of three doses of digestate (20, 29 and 39 tonnes per hectare) on a maize feed crop with spray irrigation in Arkaute. In the 2011-2012 campaign, a trial using soft winter wheat was set up in Arkaute with the application of 20 and 30 t/ha. Finally, in the 2012-2013 campaign, the research was carried out in Ilarduia, also on soft winter wheat with the application of 30 t/ha of digestate.
