Obama jokes about aging during 2nd term

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama joked Saturday that the years are catching up to him and he's not "the strapping young Muslim socialist" he used to be.

Obama poked fun at himself as well as some of his political adversaries during the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner attended by politicians, members of the media and Hollywood celebrities.

Entering to the rap track "All I Do Is Win" by DJ Khaled, Obama joked about how re-election would allow him to unleash a radical agenda. But then he showed a picture of himself golfing on a mock magazine cover of "Senior Leisure."

"I'm not the strapping young Muslim Socialist that I used to be," the president remarked, and then recounted his recent 2-for-22 basketball shooting performance at the White House Easter Egg hunt.

But Obama's most dramatic shift for the next four years appeared to be aesthetic. He presented a montage of shots featuring him with bangs similar to those sometimes sported by his wife.

"So we borrowed one of Michelle's tricks," Obama said. "I thought this looked pretty good, but no bounce."

Obama closed by noting the nation's recent tragedies in Massachusetts and Texas, praising Americans of all stripes from first responders to local journalists for serving the public good.

Saturday night's banquet not far from the White House attracted the usual assortment of stars from Hollywood and beyond. Actors Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Claire Danes, who play government characters on series, were among the attendees, as was Korean entertainer Psy. Several Cabinet members, governors and members of Congress were present.

And despite coming at a somber time, nearly two weeks after the deadly Boston Marathon bombing and 10 days after a devastating fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, the president and political allies and rivals alike took the opportunity to enjoy some humor. Late-night talk-show host Conan O'Brien headlined the event.

Some of Obama's jokes came at his Republican rivals' expense. He asked that the GOP's minority outreach begin with him as a "trial run" and said he'd take his recent charm offensive with Republicans on the road, including events with conservatives such as Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Michele Bachmann.

"In fact, I'm taking my charm offensive on the road -- a Texas barbeque with Ted Cruz, a Kentucky bluegrass concert with Rand Paul, and a book-burning with Michele Bachmann," Obama joked.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson would have had better success getting Obama out of office if he simply offered the president $100 million to drop out of last year's race, Obama quipped.

And on the 2016 election, the president noted in self-referential irony that potential Republican candidate Sen. Marco Rubio wasn't qualified because he hasn't even served a full term in the Senate. Obama served less than four years of his six-year Senate term before he was elected president in 2008.

"I mean, the guy has not even finished a single term in the Senate and he thinks he's ready to be President," Obama joked.

The gala also was an opportunity for six journalists, including Associated Press White House Correspondent Julie Pace, to be honored for their coverage of the presidency and national issues.

The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza won the Aldo Beckman Award, which recognizes excellence in the coverage of the presidency.

Pace won the Merriman Smith Award for a print journalist for coverage on deadline.

ABC's Terry Moran was the winner of the broadcast Merriman Smith Award for deadline reporting.

Reporters Jim Morris, Chris Hamby and Ronnie Greene of the Center for Public Integrity won the Edgar A. Poe Award for coverage of issues of national significance.

French electronic duo Daft Punk snatches top spot in UK charts

LONDON (Reuters) - French electronic duo Daft Punk notched up their first number one in Britain's official singles charts on Sunday, dislodging London drum'n'bass quartet Rudimental who were pushed into the number two spot.

Daft Punk's song "Get Lucky", featuring the guest vocals of Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers on guitar, had entered the chart the previous week in the number three spot.

It racked up sales of 155,000 in the past week, the Official Charts Company said, the biggest one-week sales tally of the year.

"Get Lucky" is the lead single from the French duo's upcoming fourth album "Random Access Memories" and is the outfit's third biggest hit behind "One More Time" (2000) and "Around The World" (1997).

In the album charts, Canadian crooner Michael Buble's "To Be Loved" held on to the number one spot for a second week.

"To Be Loved" is the follow-up to Buble's festive album "Christmas", which has sold 1.8 million copies in Britain since its release in October 2011.

"Tape Deck Heart", an album from singer-songwriter Frank Turner who performed during the warm-up to the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, went straight into the number two spot.

Meanwhile, "#willpower", a new album from will.i.am, debuted at number three.

Movie review: Performance dominates story in 'Filly Brown' | The Salt ...

"Filly Brown" is a clear case of a character (and a performance) that?s more interesting and moving than the movie she?s in.

The title is the rap handle of Majo Tonorio (played by Gina Rodriguez), a would-be rap star growing up in L.A.?s Latino community. With lyrics borrowed by her imprisoned mother (singer Jenni Rivera, who made her acting debut before her death last December in a plane crash), Majo makes an impression with record producers ? but must decide whether to sell out for quick cash or be true to her music and to her DJ, Santa (Emilio Rivera).

?

HHhj

?Filly Brown?

Opens Friday, April 26, at the Megaplex 15 at Valley Fair (West Jordan) and Cinemark 24 (Jordan Landing); rated R for language, some drug use and violence; 80 minutes.

There?s also home drama, with Majo?s hard-working father (Lou Diamond Phillips) clashing with the lawyer (Edward James Olmos) Majo has hired to represent her mother.

The story occasionally devolves into rags-to-riches clich?s, but directors Youssef Delara and Michael D. Olmos are at their best when spotlighting Rodriguez?s powerful performance behind the mic.

Scientists image nanoparticles in action

Apr. 25, 2013 ? The macroscopic effects of certain nanoparticles on human health have long been clear to the naked eye. What scientists have lacked is the ability to see the detailed movements of individual particles that give rise to those effects.

In a recently published study, scientists at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute invented a technique for imaging nanoparticle dynamics with atomic resolution as these dynamics occur in a liquid environment. The results will allow, for the first time, the imaging of nanoscale processes, such as the engulfment of nanoparticles into cells.

"We were stunned to see the large-ranged mobility in such small objects," said Deborah Kelly, an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute. "We now have a system to watch the behaviors of therapeutic nanoparticles at atomic resolution."

Nanoparticles are made of many materials and come in different shapes and sizes. In the new study, Kelly and her colleagues chose to make rod-shaped gold nanoparticles the stars of their new molecular movies. These nanoparticles, roughly the size of a virus, are used to treat various forms of cancer. Once injected, they accumulate in solid tumors. Infrared radiation is then used to heat them and destroy nearby cancerous cells.

To take an up-close look at the gold nanoparticles in action, the researchers made a vacuum-tight microfluidic chamber by pressing two silicon-nitride semiconductor chips together with a 150-nanometer spacer in between. The microchips contained transparent windows so the beam from a transmission electron microscope could pass through to create an atomic-scale image.

Using the new technique, the scientists created two types of visualizations. The first included pictures of individual nanoparticles' atomic structures at 100,000-times magnification -- the highest resolution images ever taken of nanoparticles in a liquid environment.

The second visualization was a movie captured at 23,000-times magnification that revealed the movements of a group of nanoparticles reacting to an electron beam, which mimics the effects of the infrared radiation used in cancer therapies.

In the movie, the gold nanoparticles can be seen surfing nanoscale tidal waves.

"The nanoparticles behaved like grains of sand being concentrated on a beach by crashing waves," said Kelly. "We think this behavior may be related to why the nanoparticles become concentrated in tumors. Our next experiment will be to insert a cancer cell to study the nanoparticles' therapeutic effects on tumors."

The team is also testing the resolution of the microfluidic system with other reagents and materials, bringing researchers one step closer to viewing live biological mechanisms in action at the highest levels of resolution possible.

The study appeared in the April 14 print edition of Chemical Communications in the article "Visualizing Nanoparticle Mobility in Liquid at Atomic Resolution," by Madeline Dukes, an applications scientist at Protochips Inc. in Raleigh, N.C.; Benjamin Jacobs, an applications scientist at Protochips; David Morgan, assistant manager of the Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy Facility at Indiana University Bloomington; Harshad Hegde, a computer scientist at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute; and Kelly, who is also an assistant professor of biological sciences in the College of Science at Virginia Tech.

Rhode Island on track to be 10th state with gay marriage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? The number of U.S. states allowing gay marriage is set to enter double digits now that Rhode Island's state Senate has taken a landmark vote.

Legislation allowing gay and lesbian couples to wed passed Wednesday evening by a comfortable 26-12 margin. The House has already passed the bill, but will hold a largely procedural final vote next week before the bill goes to Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an independent, who said he will sign it into law.

When he does, the last holdout in the region will join the five other New England states that already allow gay marriage. Nine states and the District of Columbia now allow gay marriage. Delaware could be the next state to follow suit ? gay marriage legislation narrowly passed the Delaware House on Tuesday and now heads to that state's Senate for consideration.

Hundreds of people filled the Rhode Island Statehouse with cheers following the vote.

"It shouldn't have taken this long," said Michael Sherman, a gay man from Warwick who watched the vote. "Religion is a choice. Being gay is not. Why should someone be able to say I can't get married because of their religion?"

Marriage legislation has been introduced in this heavily Catholic state for nearly two decades, only to languish on the legislative agenda. Supporters mounted a renewed push this year, and the Senate vote was seen as the critical test after the House easily passed the bill. Chafee called Wednesday's vote historic.

"I'm very much looking forward to signing this," he told The Associated Press as he congratulated supporters.

The first gay marriages in Rhode Island could take place Aug. 1, when the legislation would take effect. Civil unions would no longer be available to same-sex couples as of that date, though the state would continue to recognize existing civil unions. Lawmakers approved civil unions two years ago, though few couples have sought them.

Hundreds of opponents also gathered at the Statehouse for the vote, singing hymns and holding signs as the Senate deliberated. Rev. David Rodriguez, a Providence minister, said he was disappointed by the vote. He said he planned to continue to stand up for traditional marriage.

"Marriage between a man and a woman is what God wanted," he said. "We will continue to do what we know how to do: Keep praying and preaching."

The Roman Catholic Church was the bill's most significant opponent. During the Senate's emotional debate several senators said they struggled mightily, weighing their personal religious beliefs against stories they heard from gay constituents or their families.

Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, D-Providence, said she lost sleep over her vote but decided, despite opposition from the Catholic Church, to vote "on the side of love."

"I'm a practicing Catholic. I'm proud to be a Catholic," she said, adding that it was the personal stories of gays, lesbians and their families in her district who convinced her. "I struggled with this for days, for weeks. It's certainly not an easy vote."

Opponents of the bill tried unsuccessfully to send the question to the voters as a ballot referendum. After that failed, Sen. Harold Metts, D-Providence, told his colleagues that he couldn't go against his religious convictions and that residents in his community are more concerned about other matters.

"My constituents are more concerned with bread-and-butter issues," he said. "They want food on the table. They want their kids to get a good education."

The Rhode Island legislation states that religious institutions may set their own rules regarding who is eligible to marry within the faith and specifies that no religious leader is obligated to officiate at any marriage ceremony and no religious group is required to provide facilities or services related to a gay marriage.

While ministers already cannot be forced to marry anyone, the exemption helped assuage some senators' concerns and ease the bill's passage this year.

Two years after gay marriage legislation foundered in Rhode Island, supporters regrouped and this year mounted an aggressive and coordinated campaign that included organized labor, religious leaders, business owners and leaders including Chafee and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.

The bill's chances improved further when Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed said she would allow the bill to move forward, despite her opposition to gay marriage. The Newport Democrat voted no on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the Senate's five Republicans announced they would support the measure. Senate Minority Leader Dennis Algiere, R-Westerly, said the decision came down to core Republican principles.

"This is an issue of fairness, equality and civil rights," Algiere said. "Those are our values, and we stand by them."

House Speaker Gordon Fox, D-Providence, who is gay, had vowed to hold a vote on gay marriage early in the session. He said his chamber will hold hearing April 30 on the small changes made to the bill in the Senate. A final vote is tentatively scheduled for May 2.

Annie Silva, 61, predicted that more states would soon join Rhode Island. Silva and her partner of 30 years live just across the border in North Attleboro, Mass. She hopes to retire to her home state of Rhode Island now that the state is poised to extend marriage rights to gays and lesbians.

"No. 10 is a nice round number, but I'd like it to be bigger. Fifty sounds good to me," she said.

Sudan's biggest sugar firm plans biofuel expansion, Joburg IPO

By Ulf Laessing and Khalid Abdelaziz

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Kenana, Sudan's biggest sugar producer, plans to more than triple its ethanol output within two years to become a major biofuel exporter and intends to make a stock market offering in South Africa, its managing director said.

Kenana, which is mainly owned by the governments of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, is aiming to more than double its annual sugar output to 1 million tonnes by 2015 as the firm seeks new export markets such as South Sudan, Mohamed El Mardi El Tegani told Reuters.

Sudan, one of Africa's biggest sugar producers after Egypt and South Africa, wants to cut dependency on imports of sugar, a big ingredient in Sudanese food, which makes prices of the commodity politically sensitive locally.

The Khartoum-based company plans a major expansion to diversify into "green products" such as bio fuel, fertilizer and animal feed to satisfy rising demand at home and abroad.

Boosting sugar and biofuel production would help Sudan overcome the loss of most oil reserves with South Sudan's secession in 2011. Oil used to be the main source for dollars needed to fund imports of sugar or gasoline.

Kenana wants to boost its annual production of biofuel to 200 million litres by 2015 from 65 million, of which 50 percent would be exported.

While currently 95 percent of its output is being sold to the European Union, Kenana launched this month a partnership with Nile Petroleum, one of Sudan's biggest oil distributors, to roll out ethanol at petrol stations.

"There is a big potential for production in Sudan," Tegani said in an interview on Thursday. "It improves the environment. Cost-wise definitely ethanol is cheaper than the normal gasoline," he said. Sudan is cutting down on fuel subsidies fuelling a budget deficit.

To fund its expansion, Kenana expects to get $500 million in a capital injection this year from its main shareholders, he said.

To raise more the firm plans to make next year a 25 percent an initial public offering with a primary listing in Johannesburg and secondary listing in Dubai, he said. Kenana has appointed Russia-focused Renaissance Capital and Dubai investment bank Shuaa Capital to manage the offering.

He gave no details but the firm said last year it planned to raise around $200 million. It had previously eyed an offering in Hong Kong late last year but given up the plan due to U.S. sanctions deterring firms around the globe to deal with Sudan.

SUGAR

Kenana will produce around 370,000 tonnes of sugar at its plant in White Nile state in the 2012-13 season, up from around 355,000 last year, he said. It aims to produce more than 400,000 tonnes next season after adding some 11,000 acres of land.

It also plans to refine this year 200,000 tonnes of imported raw sugar from Brazil, which will be to be exported to African neighbours such as Chad and the Central African Republic.

Two new plants will come online to help double output. Redais, in which Chinese investors have a stake, will produce some 500,000 tonnes of raw sugar from 2015. El Ramash in Sennar state will produce 150,000 tonnes from 2016.

"We are in talks for a major contract with South Sudan...We expect to do around 100,000 tonnes," he said. Kenana already exported 100,000 tonnes raw sugar to the EU and 30,000 tonnes of white sugar to Kenya this year.

Sudan's White Nile Sugar Co, in which Kenana is the biggest shareholder, expects to produce 130,000 tonnes in the 2012-13 season after launching its operations last year, Tegani said. Output would double to 250,000 tonnes next year

As part of its "green" diversification, Kenana also plans to launch 200,000 tonnes of annual production of bio fertilizer from December. Half of that would be exported to the EU and Gulf with the rest to be sold at home.

The firm would also start producing between 100,000 tonnes and 150,000 cubic meters per day of carbon dioxide this year, he said. Kenana also plans making "green" plastic.
